Why KonMari Method™?
I chose the KonMari Method™ because it’s not just about decluttering; it’s a transformative approach that fosters mindfulness and lasting change. Unlike other methods, KonMari focuses on what sparks joy, shifting the focus from simply discarding items to cherishing what truly matters. This mindset creates a deeper emotional connection to your belongings, making it easier to maintain organization in the long term.
Additionally, the method’s structured approach—working through categories rather than rooms—ensures thoroughness and prevents clutter from reappearing. Its emphasis on gratitude and respect for possessions also resonates deeply, making the process more meaningful and personal.
Compared to other approaches, the KonMari method doesn’t feel like a temporary fix. It’s a holistic journey that aligns your space with your values and lifestyle, resulting in a home or workspace that brings genuine joy and supports your well-being.
The 6 Basic Rules of Tidying in the KonMari Method™ are:
Commit Yourself to Tidying Up – Tidying is a one-time event, not a never-ending daily task. Set aside time, be fully present, and trust the process. Committing means understanding that decluttering your space can also transform your mindset and lifestyle.
Imagine Your Ideal Lifestyle – Visualize the space and life you want to create before you start decluttering. Ask yourself:
How do I want my space to feel?
What kind of life do I want to live here?
How will a clutter-free space improve my daily routine?
This vision will guide your decisions throughout the process
Finish Discarding First – Don’t organize until you’ve removed everything you don’t need. Keep only the items that truly bring value and joy. This ensures you are not just rearranging clutter but creating a fresh start.
Tidy by Category, Not by Location – Instead of tidying room by room, sort by category. Gather all similar items together to see exactly how much you own. The categories are:
Clothes
Books
Papers
Komono (miscellaneous items like kitchenware, electronics, toiletries, etc.)
Sentimental items (the most difficult, saved for last)
Follow the Right Order – There’s a reason for this sequence—it helps you build decision-making skills gradually. Starting with clothes is easier than starting with sentimental items, which carry deep emotions.
Ask Yourself If It Sparks Joy – Only you can know what kind of environment makes you happy – this is the underlying principle of the KonMari Method™. It’s also what sets it apart from other tidying techniques that rely on strict guidelines instead of personal criteria. You’ve probably heard “Discard anything you haven’t used in two years,” or “Every time you buy something new, get rid of something old.” But Marie’s method is different.
